Cairns Airport is located about five kilometres north of the central business district. It is surrounded by high terrain from the south-east through to the west and north-west. More than 300 metres high, Lumley Hill is located one kilometre due west of the runway.
The airport has direct flights to international and domestic destinations and many general aviation flights including a number of helicopter operators.
Cairns Airport has no curfew and does experience some seasonal increases in night movements. However, noise abatement procedures minimise the impacts of aircraft noise on the community.
